Detailed description of River Ridge Golf Club, Closed 2017

River Ridge Golf Club is a 27 hole public golf facility located in Sealy, Texas. The facility has three 9-hole golf courses. They are The River Course, The Ridge Course, and The Parkland Course. These three courses can be paired to form three different 18-hole combinations.

The courses at River Ridge Golf Club opened for play in 1998. They were designed by Jay Riviere.

The course is a classic, traditional, pure-golf venue just 35 minutes west of Houston's 610 Loop at I-10 on the scenic Brazos River.

Three distinct 9-hole courses, each with its own personality, provide the feel of Old World courses built a century ago in the Eastern United States and the British Isles. Jay Riviere's inspiration for this parkland-style course came from playing Winged Foot, Quaker Ridge, Oak Hill, Glen Eagles, and Turnberry.

Each 9-hole layout is built on over 120 acres, substantially larger than modern-day nines. The result is a grand scale with large forest floors and more than thirty-five acres of lakes and creeks separating fairways and greens. The nine fieldstone bridges over the creeks complete the Old World personality.

The course closed November 2017.

The Brazos River was both the courses asset and curse. The course sits in a floodplain and major floods have plagued the course the past several years.  Hurricane Harvey was the final blow for the 27-hole course, convincing the owners that it was time to admit that it was too costly to try and compete against mother nature.

Great conditions for winter play. Love the hills. No homes on course makes it like a real golf course that used the terrain, not the developers lot layout.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Ranks with the best in this price level

Several tee boxes were in need of work - very hard and sparce grass on some. Sand in bunkers was river - quite course but very playable. Fairways in good shape and green were in excellent condition. Comparing this to other courses of this caliber, the fees are high and the outdoor snack bar was the only area open. The clubhouse bar area was closed as was the patio at the clubhouse. Many of us like to enjoy the air conditioned comfort of a lounge at the end of a round to discuss event of the day's round and sort the winners and losers over something cold to drink.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area

If you like your golf in a traditional, straight-forward fashion, you'll love River Ridge. You can stand on every tee and know what you need to do. No tricks. Fairways and greens are always among the best in southeast Texas. Great staff, great pace of play, no houses. Just golf.
